Zimbabwe Falls Short Against India
Zimbabwe lost by 23 runs to India in the third ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Skipper Sikandar Raza said they gave away 20 extra runs, which cost them the match. Despite his good performance, Raza highlighted the need for improvement.

Raza’s bowling performance was impressive, as he picked up two wickets and conceded only 24 runs in his four-over spell. In the second innings, he contributed with a 15-run knock off 16 balls, hitting three fours. Speaking after the match, Raza expressed pride in his side’s fielding, despite acknowledging that there were lapses that contributed to the loss.
“I think it’s the fielding again, we are proud of our fielding but the wheels came off today, we gave away 20 extra runs and we lost by 23 runs. We still have problems at the top but I have utmost faith in them that they will come good some time. We have tried 15 different partners (openers) in the last year and a half or so,” Raza said.
Senior Players Need to Step Up
Raza emphasized the importance of senior players taking responsibility and minimizing mistakes. He highlighted that while mistakes from younger players are expected, the experienced members of the team must lead by example and contribute consistently.
“There is a lot of cricket going on in the country and club cricket has revived. It’s time that our players including myself take up the responsibility. The youngsters making mistakes is acceptable but the senior players need to step up. You cannot fix a problem by creating another problem, we have picked 3 openers for a reason. The openers that have been picked up should be given a run. (On Muzarabani) He has been outstanding, sometimes the rewards don’t come but in the long run the rewards do come,” he added.

India opted to bat first and set a competitive target with a total of 182/4 in their 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a 67-run partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal (36 off 27 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) and skipper Shubman Gill. Gill continued his fine form with a crucial 66 off 49 balls, which included seven fours and three sixes, and formed a 72-run partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored a quick 49 off 28 balls with four boundaries and three sixes.
Blessing Muzarabani (2/25) and Sikandar Raza (2/24) were the standout bowlers for Zimbabwe, managing to contain India to a certain extent.
Zimbabwe’s Struggle and Fightback
Chasing 183, Zimbabwe’s batting line-up struggled initially, finding themselves at 39/5. However, a resilient 77-run partnership between Dion Myers (65* off 49 balls, with seven fours and a six) and Clive Madande (37 off 26 balls, with two fours and two sixes) gave Zimbabwe a fighting chance. Despite their efforts, Zimbabwe fell short, finishing at 159/6 in 20 overs.
Washington Sundar (3/15) and Avesh Khan (2/39) were the top performers with the ball for India. Khaleel Ahmed also contributed with a wicket.
