Virat Kohli Records IPL’s Joint-Slowest Century, Reflects on His Approach

Kohli’s Deliberate Approach

In a remarkable display of skill and perseverance, Virat Kohli etched his name in the IPL history books by scoring a century against Rajasthan Royals, albeit in 67 deliveries, marking the joint-slowest century in the tournament’s history. This feat was previously achieved by Manish Pandey in 2009. Despite this, Kohli’s innings were laden with milestones, including his record-extending eighth century in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore, tying his personal best score in the league with an unbeaten 113. Additionally, he became the first player to surpass the 7500-run mark in the IPL. Virat Kohli’s historic century in IPL 2024 against Rajasthan Royals showcases his adaptability and strategic prowess.

However, Kohli’s century, achieved in equal measure with Pandey’s slowest IPL ton, was a notable aspect of his innings, reflecting a deliberate approach under challenging conditions. Post-match, Kohli shared insights into his strategy, emphasizing a lack of premeditation and a focus on adapting to the pitch conditions, which appeared deceptive from the outside. Despite the track seeming flat, Kohli noted the ball’s tendency to hold up, necessitating adjustments in pace.

Challenging Conditions and Milestones

Kohli’s disciplined approach yielded 12 fours and four sixes, culminating in a composed 113 not out from 72 balls. However, Royal Challengers Bangalore concluded their innings at 183 for 3, a total influenced by the challenging conditions and the formidable spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin from Rajasthan Royals, which Kohli acknowledged made aggressive batting difficult.

Reflecting on the partnership dynamics, Kohli underscored the importance of either him or Faf du Plessis batting through the innings, believing their total to be competitive given the pitch conditions. He stressed the significance of experience and maturity in playing according to the conditions, even in the presence of dew, which did not simplify batting due to the pitch’s rough and dry nature.

Kohli candidly discussed the challenges posed by the Royals’ spinners, particularly the difficulty in handling Ashwin’s carrom ball and the strategic shift towards targeting straight down the ground, emphasizing a thoughtful adaptation to the unfolding match scenario.
