Shamar Joseph’s IPL 2024 debut struggles were evident as he had a rough start in his first match, conceding 47 runs in 4 overs, including 22 runs in just the first over.
Playing for Lucknow Super Giants, the West Indies fast bowler faced challenges against Kolkata Knight Riders’ batters on the Eden Gardens pitch, exacerbating the situation. His troubles peaked when the last ball of his first over cost him 15 runs, compounded by 2 no-balls and 2 wides, with Phil Salt hitting a big six, adding to the woes.
Joseph had already given up 7 runs with his first 5 balls. Even though Yash Thakur missed a catch on the last ball, it didn’t count because Joseph had overstepped. He then bowled two wides, the second of which went for a boundary. Things didn’t improve as his next ball was also a no-ball, and that single delivery ended up costing his team 15 runs.
After the match, LSG captain KL Rahul talked about Joseph’s tough day.
“It was just one of those tough days. It’s hard to take, but all teams face this sometimes in the IPL. We’ll look at what went wrong and try to improve. The conditions changed in the second innings, and we didn’t adapt well, losing too many wickets at once. We also didn’t score enough runs,” Rahul said.
“He (Joseph) is fast and was eager to make an impact but ended up being a bit erratic. That’s common in a debut match. He needs to work on being more accurate. He did get the ball to move early on. We’re not worried about the losses yet; we just need to figure out our mistakes. Lately, we haven’t scored over 160, and we need to work on that,” he added.
Kolkata Knight Riders won the match against Lucknow Super Giants by 8 wickets.
