Many believed Dhoni would retire, but during the trophy ceremony, he surprised everyone by announcing he would play another season as a “gift” to his fans. This decision has led to some issues for CSK in 2024.
At the start of the 2024 IPL season, Dhoni stepped down as captain, and Ruturaj Gaikwad took over. In 2022, Jadeja tried to lead but was unsuccessful. This time, the team and fans fully supported Gaikwad as the new captain.
However, there’s been ongoing discussion about Dhoni’s influence on the field. Known as a brilliant tactician, Dhoni has shown he can change the outcome of games with his strategic thinking. With him no longer captain, there’s curiosity about how much control Gaikwad will have.
While Dhoni used to be a key player, his role as a batter has been confusing in 2024. He didn’t bat in the first two games, and in the third game, he batted too late to make a significant impact, scoring 37 off 16 balls but ultimately, the team couldn’t reach the target.
Dhoni’s Uncertain Role
In subsequent games, Jadeja continued to bat before Dhoni, raising questions about why Dhoni wasn’t batting when the team needed him the most. Over the years, Dhoni has batted in various positions based on the team’s needs, but batting at No. 8 doesn’t give him enough time to be effective.
Most teams now prefer wicket-keepers who can also contribute significantly with the bat. For example, Lucknow Super Giants have KL Rahul, Quinton De Kock, and Nicholas Pooran, while Rajasthan Royals use Dhruv Jurel and Jos Buttler. CSK, on the other hand, only lists Dhoni as a wicket-keeper on their official website. This could be problematic if Dhoni gets injured, as the only other potential replacement is the young Aravelly Avanish Rao.
Although Dhoni’s leadership experience is invaluable, he could potentially serve in a mentor role instead of playing. CSK has started the 2024 season well, but Dhoni’s unclear role and a missed catch against Kolkata Knight Riders have led some to wonder if his farewell tour is more of a hindrance than a help to the team.
