Controversial LBW Decision Sparks Outrage in RCB vs RR IPL 2024 Eliminator

Controversial LBW Call Sparks Debate

The IPL2024 Eliminator between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) witnessed a controversial moment that left fans and experts fuming. Dinesh Karthik was involved in a contentious LBW decision that stirred heated debates and raised questions about the umpiring standards.

The Incident

Firstly,In the 15th over of RCB’s innings, Dinesh Karthik faced his first delivery from Avesh Khan. Furthermore, the full and straight delivery bent late and struck Karthik on the pads. The on-field umpire adjudged him LBW. Karthik immediately reviewed the decision, leading to a dramatic use of the Decision Review System (DRS).

DRS Drama

The UltraEdge technology showed a significant spike, but it was ambiguous whether it was due to the bat hitting the pad or the ball. The ball was very close to the bat, making it difficult to ascertain the actual cause of the spike. Despite the uncertainty, the third umpire overturned the on-field decision, declaring Karthik not out. This decision left the RR players, especially Avesh Khan and Riyan Parag, visibly shocked. RR’s Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, was seen animatedly discussing the call with the umpires.

Expert Opinions

The controversial decision drew sharp criticism from cricket experts and former players. Sreesanth, a member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup-winning teams, expressed his frustration on social media. “That decision in the live cricket match was absolutely terrible! Seriously, what was that all about? It was so obvious that he was out! The qualification of the third umpire is seriously in question here. Are they blind or do they have no knowledge about cricket at all? Infuriating!” he wrote on X.

Sunil Gavaskar, providing commentary during the match, had a clear stance. “The bat hit the pads and not the ball. If you’ve edged, you go straight up. You don’t walk to the other end to confirm,” he said.

Kevin Pietersen also criticized the decision, stating, “I don’t think the umpire got it right.”

RCB’s Innings

Royal Challengers Bengaluru managed to score 172/8 in their 20 overs after being put in to bat. Rajat Patidar top-scored with 34 off 22 balls, showing his class with some exquisite shots. In-form opener Virat Kohli contributed 33 off 24 balls before falling to the wily leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Mahipal Lomror added a brisk 32 off 17 balls, providing momentum to the innings.

Rajasthan Royals’ Bowling Performance

Rajasthan Royals’ bowlers put up an impressive show. Senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bowled beautifully, finishing with figures of 2/19 in four overs. He took the crucial wickets of Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell in successive balls, putting RCB on the back foot. Avesh Khan, despite the controversy surrounding the LBW decision, was effective, claiming 3/44 in his four overs.

Brief Scores

  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 172/8 in 20 overs (Rajat Patidar 34, Virat Kohli 33, Mahipal Lomror 32; Ravichandran Ashwin 2/19, Avesh Khan 3/44).

The IPL2024 Eliminator between RCB and RR will be remembered not only for the intense cricketing action but also for the controversial LBW decision involving Dinesh Karthik. The debate over the umpiring decision added an extra layer of drama to an already thrilling encounter. As the tournament progresses, the focus will be on how such incidents are managed and the impact they have on the teams involved.
