In an IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, Virat Kohli found himself embroiled in a contentious umpiring dispute following his dismissal. In the third over of RCB’s innings, Kohli struck a full-toss from bowler Harshit Rana straight back to him. While KKR celebrated, Kohli contested the decision, believing the ball to be above his waist and thus illegal. Kohli was upset by the decision and argued with the umpires along with RCB’s captain, Faf Du Plessis. He looked very unhappy as he walked back to the dugout.
According to ICC rules (Law 41.7.1), a delivery above waist height without pitching is unfair. However, if the ball is dipping, it’s considered fair. Replays showed the ball would have come down below Kohli’s waist if he was standing in his normal position, and since he was outside the crease, it was a fair delivery.
