Indian football superstar Sunil Chhetri, as a prominent Indian football star, plays a crucial role in the development of football in India. Born in 1984, he is the captain of Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League and the Indian national team. Since 2002,Indian football superstar Sunil Chhetri embarked on his professional football journey, initially playing for Mohun Bagan. He had an impressive debut season there, scoring six goals in the 2005 season. Later, he moved to JCT and contributed three goals. He also became the third player from the subcontinent to ply his trade abroad. He joining Major League Soccer team Kansas City Wizards. After Chirag United and Mohun Bagan, he joined Sporting CP’s reserve team in the Primeira Liga.
Since 2005, Chhetri has been a key member of the Indian national team, playing a pivotal role in the team’s success. He won the Nehru Cup in 2007, 2009, and 2012, and claimed the SAFF Championship title in 2011, 2015, and 2021. He also helped India win the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008, securing their qualification for the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in nearly 30 years, and scored twice in the final in 2011.
For his outstanding performances on the football field, Chhetri received numerous accolades. He received the Arjuna Award in 2011, Padma Shri in 2019, and the Khel Ratna Award in 2021, impressive feat. Additionally, he was named the AIFF Player of the year for seven consequetive times.
