Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar criticized Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya for his bowling after MS Dhoni hit him for three consecutive sixes in an IPL 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Despite taking two wickets, Hardik gave away 20 runs in the last four balls of the CSK innings to Dhoni. Gavaskar called Hardik’s performance “ordinary bowling and ordinary captaincy” and critiqued the types of balls he bowled.
“This might be the worst kind of bowling I’ve seen in a very long time. He bowled as if he wanted to be hit for sixes. One six is okay, but then he bowled another length ball, knowing Dhoni was looking for it to hit another six. Then, a full toss on the leg side, which Dhoni also hit for a six. Absolutely ordinary bowling and captaincy,” Gavaskar commented during the mid-innings break.
Rohit’s Century and Mumbai’s Loss
Gavaskar also mentioned a moment before the match when Hardik ran over to Dhoni and hugged him, a moment that has been widely shared online.
In the match, Rohit Sharma’s century was not enough as Mumbai Indians lost to Chennai Super Kings by 20 runs. Rohit played well, but his team kept losing wickets regularly, and Matheesha Pathirana’s four wickets secured the win for CSK.
Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube hit half-centuries, and Dhoni’s late hitting against Hardik helped CSK reach a total of 206. With this win, CSK stayed in third place while Mumbai Indians remained eighth in the league with only four points from six games.
