Controversy Surrounds Shaheen Afridi’s Removal as Pakistan’s T20I Captain, A 1992 World Cup Winner Speaks Out

Captaincy Changes in Pakistan Cricket

The recent shake-up in Pakistan cricket has stirred significant debate. Babar Azam stepped down as the captain across all formats following the 2023 ODI World Cup. Shaheen Afridi was then appointed as the T20I captain, while Shan Masood took charge of the Test side. However, Afridi’s tenure was short-lived. After a disappointing 4-1 series loss to New Zealand, just before the 2024 T20 World Cup, Afridi was stripped of his captaincy. Babar Azam was reinstated as the white-ball captain, raising questions about the fairness of these decisions.

Moin Khan’s Perspective on Shaheen Afridi

Moin Khan, a former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter and member of the 1992 World Cup-winning team, has expressed his views on the situation. According to Khan, removing Shaheen Afridi as T20I captain was unjust. He believes Afridi deserved more time to prove his leadership capabilities.

“Shaheen Afridi has the ability to lead the team and is highly liked by the players. He is an excellent choice for captaincy in T20s,” Khan told Cricket Pakistan. He further added, “In white-ball cricket, I don’t see anyone else suitable for the role. Removing him from the captaincy was unjust. He is one of the best T20 World Cup players, and I’ve noticed his performance has slightly declined since he was removed from the captaincy.”

Khan argues that players need confidence and stability to perform well. He emphasizes that frequent changes in leadership can undermine a player’s confidence and impact their performance negatively. “How can you expect good performance if you don’t give players confidence? They should be given some time as captain,” he explained.

Speculation About Future Leadership

Amidst these changes, speculation about the future of Pakistan’s captaincy continues. Reports suggest that Mohammad Rizwan might replace Babar Azam as the white-ball captain. Khan has weighed in on this potential shift, noting that while Rizwan is a capable player, there are factors to consider.

“A single captain can be appointed for all formats of cricket, but it’s crucial for any player to perform across all formats to achieve this,” Khan said. He emphasized the importance of long-term stability in captaincy roles, stating, “Whoever becomes captain should have the responsibility for a long term.”

Khan also acknowledged Rizwan’s abilities but raised concerns about his long-term potential. “There is no doubt about Mohammad Rizwan’s abilities; any criticism against him might be due to his age. It’s also important to consider how long he can represent the team if given leadership,” Khan noted. He suggested that while Rizwan could be a strong short-term captain, the team needs to groom younger players for future leadership roles. “We often appoint captains but fail to prepare a suitable deputy,” he added.

The Road Ahead for Pakistan Cricket

As Pakistan navigates these leadership changes, the team’s performance and stability will be under scrutiny. The transition from Babar Azam to Shaheen Afridi and potentially to Mohammad Rizwan reflects broader challenges within the team. Balancing leadership roles while maintaining player confidence and performance will be crucial for Pakistan’s success in T20 World Cup.

Moin Khan’s insights highlight the complexities of cricket leadership and the need for thoughtful decision-making. As Pakistan prepares for future challenges, the focus will be on finding the right balance and ensuring that leadership changes contribute positively to the team’s success.
